b element

If you don't know what an element is or how you must use it, I recommend you read the "HTML tags and attributes" tutorial that you can find in the HTML tutorials section.

Description

The b element represents text offset from its surrounding content. This element doesn't grant any special meaning to its content, nor any kind of emphasis or importance. It's purpose is to draw the reader's attention to the text it's containing without any other implication.

You'll normally find the b element wrapping keywords, brand or product names, people names, the opening text in a phrase or an article lede. Also, it's normal to expect text within the b element to be rendered in bold style, by typographic convention.

You should be aware, that the b element doesn't bestow any emphasis or importance to the text it's wrapping. To achieve one of these effects use the elements em and strong.

Examples

The next example shows how the b element can be used wrap company or product names.

<p>Those stats are up from the same quarter last year, when <b>Samsung</b> shipped 92.5 million units good for 24.5% of the market.</p>
<p>One-time market leader <b>Nokia</b> continued to see the past slip away, as first-quarter mobile phone shipments plummeted to 61.9 million units from 82.7 million in the year-ago quarter.</p>

One-time market leader Nokia continued to see the past slip away, as first-quarter mobile phone shipments plummeted to 61.9 million units from 82.7 million in the year-ago quarter.

Now, we'll draw the attention of the reader to the text by wrapping the beginning of the phrase with the b element.

<p><b>The morning had dawned clear and cold</b>, with a crispness that hinted at the end of summer. They set forth at daybrak to see a man beheaded, twenty in all, and Bran rode among them, nervous with exitement.</p>

Lastly, this example shows an article with a lede wrapped in b.
